    1. Wigilia is a meatless meal, although fish is often eaten as well. The food is supposed to be representative of the bounty of nature, with dishes from the farm (beets and preserved cabbage, also known as sauerkraut,), food from the forest (mushrooms), food from the orchards (dried fruit compote) and other things you can make in the winter like pierogi and an assortment of baked goods. A poppy seed bread called makowiec is also traditionally served. Poppy seeds are ground and sweetened into a paste which is then rolled into a yeast-risen dough. It’s a lot of work!
